Access Control and Turnstile Deployment at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja

Executed by H-Yetux Nigeria Limited

Security, efficiency, and controlled access are critical components of any modern transportation hub — and airports, in particular, demand precision-engineered systems that ensure both safety and smooth passenger flow.

H-Yetux Nigeria Limited, a leading provider of integrated IT and security infrastructure solutions, successfully deployed a ZKTeco Waist Turnstile Access Control System with Professional Facial Recognition Technology (ProFace) at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, enhancing both security and operational efficiency across key entry and exit points.

Project Overview

The deployment aimed to modernize access control systems at strategic airport locations, ensuring seamless management of authorized personnel, visitors, and service staff. The solution combined ZKTeco’s high-performance waist-height turnstile gates with ProFace biometric terminals, offering a state-of-the-art authentication system that integrates facial recognition, RFID card access, and real-time monitoring capabilities.

The project was tailored to the airport’s unique operational requirements — balancing high throughput capacity, aesthetic design, and stringent security protocols demanded by aviation authorities.

System Components and Configuration

The deployed system included the following major components:

  1. ZKTeco Waist Turnstile Units

    • Durable stainless-steel construction designed for long-term use in high-traffic environments.

    • Integrated LED indicators for passage direction and status.

    • Smooth and silent rotation mechanisms ensuring safe and quick access for users.

    • Compact footprint suitable for limited-space installations without compromising performance.

  2. ZKTeco ProFace Biometric Terminals

    • Advanced facial recognition with high-speed matching capability (less than 0.5 seconds per verification).

    • Dual-mode authentication: Face ID + RFID/Access Card.

    • Infrared sensors and adaptive lighting for accurate recognition in varying light conditions.

    • Seamless integration with ZKBioSecurity software for centralized management.

  3. ZKBioSecurity Software Integration

    • Centralized platform managing user enrollment, authentication logs, and access permissions.

    • Real-time event monitoring, reporting, and alerts.

    • Integration with airport security systems and time attendance records for internal staff.

  4. Network and Power Infrastructure by H-Yetux

    • Secure LAN cabling and switch configuration to ensure stable communication between all biometric terminals and the control center.

    • Structured power distribution system with UPS backup for continuous operation in case of power interruption.

System Features and Capabilities

The integrated system delivered a robust and intelligent access management framework with the following key features:

  • Facial Recognition Access: Quick, contactless authentication ideal for hygienic and high-traffic environments.

  • RFID Card Compatibility: Supports proximity cards for staff and authorized personnel without facial registration.

  • Visitor and Staff Differentiation: Role-based access levels assigned for different personnel categories (staff, contractors, visitors).

  • Real-Time Monitoring: Centralized control room displays live entry logs and alerts for unauthorized attempts.

  • Audit Trails and Reporting: Automatic generation of user activity reports for compliance and investigation.

  • Integration Flexibility: Can interface with existing airport security, HR, and time attendance systems.

Deployment Process by H-Yetux

The H-Yetux engineering team executed the project in several phases to ensure quality and minimal disruption to airport operations:

  1. Site Survey and Requirement Analysis
A detailed technical assessment was conducted to determine optimal turnstile placement, user flow patterns, cabling paths, and power requirements.

  2. System Design and Customization
Our design team prepared a layout integrating turnstiles with biometric terminals, ensuring ergonomic placement and accessibility while meeting regulatory safety standards.

  3. Procurement and Pre-Installation Testing
All ZKTeco equipment underwent rigorous bench testing at H-Yetux’s facility before deployment to ensure full compatibility and performance compliance.

  4. On-Site Installation and Integration
Installation was carried out during scheduled low-traffic windows. The turnstiles were securely mounted, networked, and integrated with the airport’s central control infrastructure.

  5. Software Configuration and Database Setup
The ZKBioSecurity platform was configured for multi-level access permissions, personnel enrollment, and real-time event logging.

  6. Training and Handover
H-Yetux conducted comprehensive training sessions for airport security staff and administrators, covering system operation, user registration, reporting, and troubleshooting.

  7. Post-Deployment Support and Maintenance
Continuous monitoring, maintenance, and technical support are provided under a Service Level Agreement (SLA) to ensure uninterrupted system operation and periodic updates.

Project Outcomes and Impact

The deployment of the ZKTeco Access Control and Turnstile System has significantly improved security management and operational workflow at Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport.
Key benefits achieved include:

  • Enhanced Access Security: Only authorized individuals can access restricted areas through biometric verification.

  • Improved Efficiency: Faster processing times at entry and exit points.

  • Centralized Control: Real-time monitoring and reporting from a single interface.

  • Reduced Human Error: Automation minimizes manual record-keeping and access tracking.

  • Scalability: The system supports expansion to additional airport terminals and facilities.
